Pollaro, Flanigan named Student-Athletes of the Month

Zach Pollaro and Delaney Flanigan are the January Student-Athletes of the Month.Pollaro, a senior on the boys' basketball team, became the sixth player in program history to score 1,000 career points when he reached the milestone against New Castle last month. In the process, he helped guide the Indians to the playoffs and earned Big 56 Player of the Year honors.Off the court, Pollaro is posting a 3.3 GPA. His current course load includes three CHS classes, and he is enjoying a strong semester in the classroom.Flanigan, a sophomore on the indoor track team, is off to a great start in the first indoor track team at North Hills. Her best jump in the pole vault last month was 9'6", which had her tied for eighth in the WPIAL.In the classroom, Flanigan has a 3.7 GPA and is studying Early Childhood Education at A.W. Beattie Career Center, where she has nearly perfect grades.Congratulations, Zach and Delaney, and good luck in the remainder of your winter season and school year!

When the Big 56 announced its all-section teams for boys' and girls' basketball on Thursday, senior guard Zach Pollaro earned more than just a first-team nod.Pollaro earned the section's top honor as he was named the Big 56 6A Section 1 Player of the Year. This award, which has not been given out prior to this year, recognizes the student-athlete who had the most outstanding season in his section.This comes on the heels of a campaign that saw Pollaro eclipse 1,000 career points while leading North Hills to its fourth straight playoff appearance. His contributions kept the Indians in contention all season and drew the attention of opposing coaches, who voted on the award.Congratulations, Zach, on an incredible season and this well-deserved honor.

On Thursday, the Big 56 revealed this winter's all-section teams for boys' and girls' basketball.In girls' 6A basketball, North Hills had two student-athletes recognized on the second team. Senior forward Gia Minton and freshman guard Zoe Devlin both earned honors for their strong seasons.On the boys' side, senior guard Zach Pollaro was the lone player to be honored, as he landed on the first team in 6A. In addition, Pollaro was named Player of the Year in class 6A section 1.Congratulations to our Big 56 all-section student-athletes on their tremendous performances this season.

Boys' basketball to face Butler in WPIAL first round

The boys' basketball team is set to make its fourth consecutive playoff appearance, and it'll face a familiar opponent in round one.The WPIAL basketball brackets were released on Monday, and North Hills was awarded the 10-seed in the 6A tournament. That draw will send the Indians to Butler to face the Golden Tornado, a team they played twice in the 2025 regular season.North Hills took the first matchup between the teams 69-65 before falling in the rematch 39-51. The team that played at home won each matchup this season.The first-round tilt between North Hills and Butler will be played on Monday, February 17, at Butler. Tip-off is set for 7:00. As this game is a WPIAL event, tickets will be $5 for students and $7 for adults if purchased in advance via GoFan. The winter sports regular season is all but wrapped up. Here is a look at where we stand as the remaining teams and student-athletes set their sights on the postseason:Girls' BasketballGirls' basketball went 1-1 last week, falling to North Allegheny before beating Woodland Hills 65-40. Unfortunately, North Hills needed two wins to qualify for the playoffs, so the season will come to an end on Monday when the girls play their final game.Boys' BasketballThe boys' basketball team also went 1-1 last week, but one win was all they needed. A win against North Allegheny on Tuesday helped the boys clinch a playoff berth. They will learn who and when they play when the bracket is unveiled on Monday.GymnasticsNorth Hills saw five girls compete in the WPIAL Gymnastics Championships last week. Between the girls, there were four top-20 finishes for North Hills. On Friday night, North Hills and Woodland Hills will face off to wrap up the boys' basketball regular season.North Hills is looking to go into the postseason on a winning streak after clinching a playoff berth on Tuesday night. Meanwhile, Woodland Hills needs a win on Friday night to qualify for the 6A championship bracket.When these two teams met last month, North Hills came away with an 82-56 victory.The game between the Indians and Wolverines tips off at 7:30 PM at the North Hills Middle School. The WPIAL Gymnastics Individual Championships begin on Saturday, February 8, and North Hills will have five girls competing.The event kicks off at 10:00 AM with the Silver Division. North Hills will have Karisa Ruckel (vault), Presley Meininger (vault & bars), and Paige Hollenberger (all-around) participating. At 2:00, the Gold Division will compete and feature Lainie Delcroix (vault) and Abbey McCann (all-around) from North Hills.This year's championships will be hosted at Moon High School. For the fourth season in a row, the North Hills boys' basketball team is heading to the postseason.The 2024-2025 campaign has not been an easy one at times for the Indians, but a pair of key results on Tuesday night have them set for the playoffs nonetheless. North Hills needed two games to go its way on Tuesday, starting with its contest at North Allegheny, where the Indians earned a 59-35 victory over the Tigers. Then, Butler defeated Pine-Richland, to seal the deal for North Hills.One section game remains this season for the boys' basketball team, which will be at home on Friday, February 7, against Woodland Hills. The Indians will then wait until the WPIAL bracket is unveiled on Monday to learn their first-round opponent.Congratulations to the boys' basketball team, and good luck in the playoffs!

On Tuesday night, the boys' basketball team will look to continue its push for the playoffs when it travels to Pine-Richland.North Hills enters Tuesday's game with a 5-5 section record, putting them in fourth place and two games ahead of the Rams. The Indians find themselves on the fringe of being a playoff team in Class 6A, and a win over Pine-Richland would go a long way in helping to solidify their standing.The first time these two teams met, the Rams came away with a 70-57 victory at North Hills. The Indians will look to get even and climb closer to the top three teams in the section, two of which they have beaten in the last two weeks.Tuesday's game will be broadcast on SportsNet Pittsburgh and streamed on the JRM Sports YouTube channel. On Monday, the North Hills varsity wrestling team took on Penn-Trafford in the first round of the WPIAL 3A playoff tournament.North Hills got off to a good start, opening the match with an advantage of more than 20 points. Penn-Trafford battled back to keep the match close, but with two bouts remaining, the Indians clinched a victory. The final score was 40-25.With the win, the boys advance to face Thomas Jefferson in the second round.
